Each year Her Mayesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands delivers a Christmas speech to put focus on specific subjects.
Two days ago, she expressed her concerns for the environment, the decay of solidarity and justice and other painful subjects.
These subjects concern all who live on this Earth and that’s why we like to provide the speech is Dutch and English.

Christmas, the festival of light in darkness, raises the expectation of peace and goodwill. Just today, the desire to help us be accompanied feelings of discontent and uneasiness to overcome us and to work for a living in harmony with fellow human beings and nature.
Many in our world live in tension and uncertainty about existence. Anxiety and concern for the morrow dominate in Europe and in our country. Care is not just about individual welfare but the welfare of all and the stewardship of the earth. With our precious planet is handled carelessly and what they give us is poorly distributed. Poverty and inequality affect the quality of life and threaten social solidarity. Selfishness and the desire to create abundance blind to damage to our natural environment and undermine community. No country can benefit from it when people only focus on personal gain. In determining the value of all funds should be more than just money. In the Earth Charter is worded this principle: “The earth, our home is a unique community. The global natural environment with its finite resources is everyone’s concern. Protecting the vitality, diversity and beauty of the earth is a holy mission. ” “Sustainability” is called today. This requires not only new requirements and rules for sustainability but also consciously dealing with all that nature gives us. The earth that nourishes life but can not speak for themselves, must voice. In all small and large decisions that will have to be reflected.
Encouraging the many initiatives for good intentions into practice. Economical use of energy and water is available to all. Critical awareness and buy show the whole range of goods and services to influence. Entrepreneurs focus more and more responsible production and take into account the climatic effects. Many people work towards the conservation and teach children closely at the irreplaceable treasures of the earth. For the connection between agriculture and environment put many will enthusiastically. In all these possibilities, we can address each other. Old and new media information and call us to take responsibility, each at their own level. What starts in the small can grow into a new culture of concern for the future. Who wants to change the world, must simply begin with himself.
All those hopeful inspire change from society get less attention in the news than worrying about money and good. A diffuse sense of unease characterizes the confidence crisis of our time. In daily work is often a shortage of experienced vision and ideals. Lack of space for individual responsibility discourages its use. Feelings of anger and powerlessness call aversion to rhetoric and rules. But fight or flight overlooking reform of structures and lifestyles. The challenge is to do something themselves, along with others and involvement in the community. Everywhere people are already taking their own initiatives to a more conscious way of life. This offers hope for a new perspective. It is the youngsters who encourage us to do so today. The force of conviction, courage and confidence they seek allies and inspire their environment with a positive momentum.
Mahatma Gandhi once said: ‘The earth has enough for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed.’ As creatures endowed with reason and conscience may be requested from us that we translate this into daily care for the earth and commitment to a just society. Connection with the neighbor and the world around us is Jesus himself lived. The message of peace and goodwill to our Christmas can lift above the fear and uncertainty of these times. Let us say what we hope and do what we can.

Kerstmis, het feest van licht in duisternis, roept de verwachting op van vrede en welbehagen. Juist vandaag kan het verlangen hiernaar ons helpen gevoelens van onvrede en onbehagen te overwinnen en ons in te zetten voor een leven in harmonie met de medemens en de natuur.
Velen in onze wereld leven in spanning en onzekerheid over het bestaan. Onrust en bezorgdheid om de dag van morgen overheersen ook in Europa en in óns land. Zorg is er niet alleen om individuele welvaart maar ook om het welzijn van allen en het beheer van de aarde. Met onze kostbare planeet wordt zorgeloos omgesprongen en wat zij ons geeft wordt slecht verdeeld. Armoede en ongelijkheid tasten de leefbaarheid aan en bedreigen maatschappelijke saamhorigheid. Zelfzucht en de hang naar overdaad maken blind voor schade aan onze natuurlijke omgeving en ondermijnen gemeenschapszin. Zicht op de eindigheid van wat de aarde ons kan geven en op de houdbaarheid van de samenleving raakt zoek.
Geen land kan er wél bij varen als mensen alleen zijn gericht op eigen gewin. Bij het bepalen van de waarde van alles moet daarom meer gelden dan geld alleen. Geldzucht en zich verrijken vervormen het doel van de economie. Aan de nood van hen die niet voor zichzelf kunnen opkomen mag niet worden voorbijgegaan. Allen moeten kunnen méédelen in welvaart zodat het menselijk welzijn steeds wordt verbonden met het algemeen belang. Bovendien moet in elke besluitvorming de kwaliteit van de toekomst meetellen. Die ligt in beschermen van natuur en milieu, respect voor het culturele erfgoed en onderkennen van de immateriële waarden die zin geven aan beschaving. Met de afwegingen die nu worden gemaakt staat ook het leven van wie na ons komen op het spel; niemand mag daarvoor de ogen sluiten. Met kennis en informatie kunnen wij ons wapenen. Daarmee mag niet angst de drijfveer worden maar een nieuw gevoel van universele verantwoordelijkheid.
In het Handvest voor de Aarde wordt dit uitgangspunt zo verwoord: ‘De aarde, ons thuis, is een unieke leefgemeenschap. De mondiale natuurlijke omgeving met haar eindige hulpbronnen is ons aller zorg. Bescherming van de vitaliteit, verscheidenheid en schoonheid van de aarde is een heilige opdracht.’ ‘Duurzaamheid’ wordt dat vandaag genoemd. Dit vraagt niet alleen nieuwe eisen en regels voor houdbaarheid maar ook het bewust omgaan met al wat de natuur ons geeft. De aarde die het leven voedt maar niet voor zichzelf kan spreken, moet stem krijgen. In alle kleine en grote beslissingen zal die moeten doorklinken.
Bemoedigend zijn de vele initiatieven om goede voornemens in praktijk te brengen. Zuinig gebruik van energie en water ligt binnen ieders bereik. Kritisch en bewust kopen blijkt het hele aanbod van goederen en diensten te kunnen beïnvloeden. Ondernemers richten zich meer en meer op verantwoorde productie en houden rekening met de gevolgen voor het klimaat. Veel mensen spannen zich in voor natuurbehoud en leren kinderen oog te krijgen voor de onvervangbare schatten van de aarde. Ook voor de verbondenheid tussen landbouw en leefomgeving zetten velen zich enthousiast in. Op al die mogelijkheden kunnen wij elkaar aanspreken. Oude en nieuwe media informeren ons en roepen op om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen, elk op eigen niveau. Wat begint in het klein kan uitgroeien tot een nieuwe cultuur van zorg om de toekomst. Wie de wereld wil veranderen, moet nu eenmaal beginnen bij zichzelf.
Al die hoopgevende aanzetten tot verandering vanuit de maatschappij krijgen in het nieuws minder aandacht dan de zorgen om geld en goed. Een diffuus gevoel van onbehagen kenmerkt de vertrouwenscrisis van deze tijd. In het dagelijks werk wordt dikwijls een tekort aan visie en idealen ervaren. Gebrek aan ruimte voor individuele verantwoordelijkheid ontmoedigt eigen inzet. Gevoelens van onmacht roepen boosheid op en afkeer van retoriek en regels. Maar vechten noch vluchten biedt uitzicht op hervorming van structuren en levensstijl. De uitdaging blijft zelf iets te dóen, samen met anderen en in betrokkenheid op de gemeenschap. Overal nemen mensen nu reeds eigen initiatieven tot een meer bewuste manier van leven. Dat biedt hoop op een nieuw toekomstperspectief. Het zijn juist de jongeren die ons vandaag daartoe aansporen. Met kracht van overtuiging, moed en zelfvertrouwen zoeken zij medestanders en inspireren zij hun omgeving met een positief elan.
Mahatma Gandhi zei eens: ‘De aarde heeft wel genoeg voor ieders behoefte maar niet voor ieders begeerte.’ Als schepselen begiftigd met verstand en geweten mag van ons worden gevraagd dat we dit vertalen in dagelijkse zorg voor de aarde en inzet voor een rechtvaardige samenleving. Verbondenheid met de naaste en met de wereld om ons heen heeft Jezus ons zelf voorgeleefd. Met de boodschap van vrede en welbehagen kan kerstmis ons uittillen boven de angst en onzekerheid van deze tijd. Laten wij zeggen wat wij hopen en doen wat wij kunnen.

It starts as easy as that. It’s encouraging to read and I want to emphasize that the German head of state jst ridicules himself and my country with everything he says / he doesn’t say these days. Let’s overcome such dull attitude and narrow-mindedness and inspire others to become creative and helping in their own surroundings!
